Apple sells nearly 12M iPhones and iPads in Q3 2010
Jul 21st
Reporting its third quarter 2010 financial results today, Apple said it sold 8.4 million iPhones in the quarter, up 61% from the year-ago quarter, and 3.27 million iPads, the latter alone contributing $2.166 billion in revenue during its first quarter of supply-constrained availability. The company posted overall revenue of $15.7 billion and a net quarterly profit of $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per diluted share, compared with revenue of $9.73 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.83 billion, or $2.01 per diluted share in Q3 2009. “It was a phenomenal quarter that exceeded our expectations all around, including the most successful product launch in Apple’s history with iPhone 4,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad is off to a terrific start, more people are buying Macs than ever before, and we have amazing new products still to come this year.” “We’re really pleased to have generated over $4 billion of cash during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the fourth fiscal quarter of 2010, we expect revenue of about $18 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $3.44”
Apple to issue free iPhone 4 bumper cases
Jul 17th
Within hours of the phone’s launch last month reports began to circulate that holding it in a certain way affected the strength of the signal.
Pressure has built on Apple to find an answer to the problem and its chief executive officer Steve Jobs has now attempted to alleviate any customer dissatisfaction by offering a free bumper case to all iPhone 4 owners.
The cases, which are designed to prevent owners using the so-called ‘death grip’ to hold their handsets, will be available from July 22nd.
At a press conference to announce the offer, Mr Jobs admitted Apple is “not perfect”, but insisted the extent of the issue had been “overblown” by the media.
He showed a succession of YouTube clips which demonstrated that other handsets had suffered from similar antenna problems and revealed that relatively few customers had complained.

According to Mr Jobs, only 0.55 per cent of the three million people who have purchased an iPhone 4 have raised the issue of signal strength and the return rate for the handset has been much lower than for the iPhone 3GS.
Anyone who is still unhappy with their iPhone 4 after using the bumper case will be able to claim a full refund.
iPhone 4.0.1 to be released today?
Jul 15th
Apple may release a minor update to iOS 4 in advance of a press conference tomorrow, according to iPhoneHellas. The 4.0.1 update would presumably be to fix the signal bar issue. The site expects Apple to release iOS 4.1 around September after a few more beta versions.
Apple iPhone 4 unlocked
Jul 13th
Planetbeing has just revealed that the iPhone 4 has been successfully unlocked.
Looks like I now have an unlocked iPhone 4. ![]()
My soft-unlocked iPhone 4 (in Canada). I’ll have video in a couple of hours once I can top-up the SIM.
Congratulations to the iPhone Dev-Team for accomplishing this in such short time. Hopefully, the unlock will be publicly available shortly after comex releases his jailbreak for iOS 4.
This comes only one day after MuscleNerd announced that the Dev-Team had a final step to complete after they achieved full i4 bars with custom “steve” background task spitting out “One more thing”.
